🌷Emoji Writing for Spring: A Creative Twist

Looking for a creative and exciting way to extend writing standards this spring season? Combining the fun of emojis with a Springtime theme, this Emoji Writing activity is perfect for getting 3rd-6th grade students engaged in writing while thinking critically about how to express their ideas.

How Emoji Writing Works

This activity is not only simple but also adaptable for all writing levels. Here's a step-by-step guide on how it works:


  1. Arrange Emojis

    First, students are given a set of Springtime-themed emojis. These could include flowers, peeps, eggs, baskets, or other spring symbols. Find my ready-to-use templates HERE. (You can also find them on Lodge's Learning). Students will cut out and arrange the emoji pieces in any sequence they choose, creating their own unique storyline. The emojis are then glued onto a writing sheet, creating the framework for their story.

  2. Write a Paragraph

    Using the emoji sequence as a guide, students write a creative and concise paragraph. The key is to encourage them to think about the different meanings each emoji could represent in their story. For example, a flower emoji could symbolize growth, a garden adventure, or even transformation, depending on how the student interprets it.   3. Illustrate

    After completing their writing, students get to illustrate their paragraph. This final step allows them to visually express their story and brings their writing to life.
